The file

What a regular would tell you.

Honest about what’s wrong with the place. Free at the desk, one per court.

The workhorse. No sea view, no sunset, and it doesn't care. Court 02 faces north, which means no glare at any hour and a surface that stays a degree or two cooler than 01 through the afternoon. If you're here to play rather than to photograph the sky, this is probably your court.

It comes into its own after dark. The floodlights are new, even, and mounted high enough that a lob doesn't disappear into them — which is more than most clubs in the country can say. The nine o'clock hour, when the day's heat has finally gone and the wind swings cross-court, is when the better games happen here. Sunday 08:00 is the over-fifties four; they'll take a walk-in and they will not spare you.

That wind is the thing to know. It comes across the court rather than down it, so it moves everything sideways a little, all night. Locals aim half a metre inside the line and look clever. You'll work it out by the second set. The service boxes were repainted in March and the lines still grip; slide accordingly.
